A crash of a different kind

In the pictures you will see a crater 20 meters wide and 10 meters deep made by a meteorite impact. The pictures show how it travelled through the atmosphere before impact. This phenomenon was seen in Mazsalaca Valmiera District of Latvia and it must have been an unforgettable day for all who witnessed this. No injury was reported from the impact of the crater and a lot of different stories have been circulating about the cause of the crater.

In the crater, burnt nitrate and sulfur was found. As the meteorites enter the earth’s atmosphere, a lot of heat is generated which leads to its components getting burnt. There are non-believers everywhere and some geologists believe that this may be a prank. The geologist believes that people have dug up the crater and a mixture of ammonium nitrate with sulfur was used to get the fire going.

    …. prank or not, it’s a pretty good sized crater…. what’s the reason people think it’s “man-made” !!

if that were dug you would see foot prints everywhere, the whole area would be a mess with mud and track of people coming and going, it would take a lot of people to dig that size hole (if they dug it by hand). but the hole is crater site is perfect, the dirt is perfectly distributed around the crater. besides that, what the hell would people in this tiny latvian town care about making a fake crater for? deductive reasoning must be an undiscovered technology for latvian geologists.

I suspect that they’re suspicious of this crater because it’s so “pretty”. That, and the very small area of burnt soil. The entire area should be scattered with thrown soil, and the intense heat of a meteorite ought to have scorched the entire crater. Then again, truth is stranger than forgery – so it’s entirely possible that it’s the real thing. I can’t claim to be an expert on meteorites… just an observant person. ;)
